How Yoga Heals the Nervous System through Body Awareness

Ever feel like your brain is stuck in buffer mode—spinning with stress, worry, and endless to-do lists? That’s your nervous system working overtime. But here’s the good news: Yoga, specifically a practice with meditative body awareness, can help reset your system, like hitting the refresh button for your energy field.

Think of your nervous system as the command center of your body. It has two main settings: one that revs you up (the fight-or-flight stress response) and one that slows you down (the rest-and-digest relaxation state). Ideally, you should move between these two states smoothly. But in today’s world, many of us get stuck in stress mode, feeling tense, and often drained.

Daily life is full of small dramas such as an unsavoury email, or an argument with a co-worker/family member. These minor stressors, when ignored, can accumulate in the body like tiny, unprocessed traumas. If left unchecked, they can build up, creating underlying triggers that make us react more intensely to future stress. A regular yoga practice acts as a clearing mechanism, helping to process and release these small tensions before they snowball into bigger emotional or physical burdens.

A practice like ours provides a way back to balance, not just by moving your body, but by tuning into it with awareness. Breathing deeply during yoga sends a signal to the brain that it’s safe to relax. This activates the vagus nerve, a key player in shifting the body into its healing state. Slow, intentional movement helps regulate an overstimulated nervous system, easing tight muscles and promoting a sense of groundedness.

Beyond the physical, yoga invites you to pay attention to your body’s sensations in a nonjudgemental way. This simple act of noticing whether it’s the rise and fall of your breath, the tension in your shoulders, or your feet on the mat, this all helps the nervous system to process the effects of stress efficiently. This type of practice develops a deepening resilience, allowing you to navigate life with grace.

The beauty of this soul lifting work is that you don’t need long yoga session to experience the benefits. A few deep breaths before answering an email, a gentle stretch in the morning, or simply noticing how your body moves as you walk can all create small but powerful shifts. Yoga isn’t just about flexibility in your muscles; it’s about flexibility in your nervous system, too. And when that happens, everything in life flows a little more smoothly.

Monthly Me-Treat - Releasing Emotional Stagnation - Sunday February 23

If you’re here it means a wee voice inside you knows a bit of “me” time is needed at this time. Perhaps you’re feeling depleted, and need to dial up your self-care. Or maybe you just simply miss me and the lovely classes and want to reconnect. I am happy you found your way here no matter the reason.

I am excited to open special classes to those who are not part of the monthly membership, however wish to join a special class from time to time.

During this retreat we will explore ways to build inner connectivity through intuition, and our felt sense and deepening awareness. There will be breathwork, meditation, discussion and some gentle postures designed to release emotional stagnation and create a beautiful spaciousness. Through this opening we will create intentions to invite joy into our truest potential.

Monthly "Me-Treat" - Navigating Conscious Digestion - Breathwork, Meditation, Light stretch, Discussion, Questions

The first of its kind will tie in with the upcoming 10-Day Rejuvenation Cleanse group being that it is related to digestion, cleansing and purification of all aspects of our Self.

I am excited to share this experience with you. We will meet Sunday January 26 from 3-5ish pm Eastern time zone. Please have a comfy spot, blanket, cushion, tea/water and something comfy to sit on. This is not a traditional style yoga class, so you could even be in your livingroom or bedroom. Comfort is key.
